Music is a big part of my life, the internet has allowed me to access the artist of my choice. I can download songs by them and find out more about their lives and message. It give music the possibility to be distributed on a global scale. It helps independent music companies a medium to fight back against the record company's that dominate most of mass media. How many times have you heard an artist made popular by the internet?
You tube and other similar applications give way to global surveillance. Anyone at anytime in the world can access videos of other people. You tube has helped lead the fight against police brutality (videos of police beating up unarmed civilians). But at the same the the congestion of so many videos leave the viewer with to many options, on what to watch. As a film major you tube for me is an archive of video footage. It is a virtual library for the world.
I could go on and on, but i think most young people recognize the wonders of the internet. My generations has been living in the world where the internet has integrated itself into our daily lives. I think most people cant even begin to imagine a world with out Google, email, facebook etc. The downside to all of these things is that the world of parents/grandparent in which people read books and looking up movie times in the news paper is slowly disappearing.
When was the last time you opened one of these?
